My design entry won second place overall. More satisfying to me, I think, though, is that it won sponsor’s honors. We didn’t find out how judging was going to work until the deadline, so I intrentionally designed this to appeal to Dan’s individual taste1.
After some of the other professional struggles I’ve had lately, it was nice to get something to work out the way I intended it.
Without (hopefully) taking too much away from the story, I’d like to make clear a couple of my perceptions on this:
(a) the school is undergoing administrative shifts – That frame was actually intended to convey the opposite: Among 6 APs, too many coordinators, and over 100 teachers of whom the majority are very set in their ways, I don’t see one new administrator overcoming the existing inertia to make much of a difference.
(b) vomit-themed color palette – I was going for decay, dammit!
1 This shouldn’t be read as cynical – Dan has some extraordinary design taste, even if I don’t buy into the Feltron thing as much as he does, and trying to appeal to his sense certainly taught me a lot in the process.
2 The actual process was actually much more convoluted than that, and some of the stuff that I’d like to claim as being intentional was only apparent after I’d already composed it. The cross fades actually reminded me more of dupioni than vomit, and may be the strongest presence of my normally overly calculated style in the presentation.
