I did it.
I busted out the “politics” tag.
So, I suppose it’s worth mentioning that the school I’m at is one of the low performing schools targeted by Mayor Villaraigosa’s Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. As things go along I’ll make note of how they’re going. I could try to be impartial, but that wouldn’t be any fun.
My take on it so far: All of the people involved are sincere. Their current plan seems to be to involve everyone (administrators, teachers, students, parents, and anyone in the neighborhood) to try to decide by consensus how the school should be run. My prediction is that, despite the sincerity, there will be at least a couple of years of just talk, followed by a plan that has no more hope of great positive change than any of the previous plans.
I don’t think there are any silver bullets. The only way to fix it is with a lot of money, talent, dedication, and just plain sweat on our brows. But the American way is to try to discover the easy shortcut, and I expect they’ll spend a lot more time looking for it than actually working on the problems at hand.
